چکیده

An ANN is an information processing paradigm that is inspired by the way biological nervous system, mainly human and primates, process sensory information. It is proposed in that environmental information in biological central nervous system (CNS) undergoes three processing stages as shown in Figure 1, (Arbib, 2003; Haykin, 2003; Dayan, & Abbot, 2001). 1. Conversion into encoded electrical signals by the sensory systems, e.g. auditory, vision etc, and transmission to central nervous system, mainly the brain, through forward links, 2. Generation of motor commands through both internal and external feedback lines for verification, 3. Supervision of the motor organs given motor commands. ABSTRACT

An Improved Odor Recognition System Using Learning Vector Quantization with a New Discriminant Analysis

A high-performance biologically-inspired odor identification system is described. As a means of odor recognition, learning vector quantization (LVQ) algorithm is employed. Performance improvement is obtained with the use of a preprocessing with discriminant analysis of input samples. Due to sample-based decision, the system can be reliably operated as a real-time electronic nose.

Biologically-Inspired Pattern Recognition For Odor Detection

It is shown that biologically-inspired data aggregation methods result in improved odor discrimination in a gas sensor array. In one typical group of experiments, the correct identification rate achieved by a neural network was improved from 92% without aggregation to 98% with aggregation.

Biologically Inspired Object Recognition using Gabor Filters

Recent advancements in the understanding of the computational processes underlying early vision have provided novel opportunities for the creation of biologically inspired vision models. Hubel and Wiesel (1968) empirically demonstrated the existence of receptive fields as a fundamental aspect of early visual processing in mammalian vision systems. Further work demonstrated that these receptive ...

Stereo-olfaction with a sniffing neuromorphic robot using spiking neurons

This paper presents a neuromorphic robot using stereo-olfaction and a sniffing system based on nonselective chemosensors that mimic the animal behavior of tracking a specific odor. In order to be able to go toward an odor source, two tasks must be performed : 1) estimation of the gas-concentration gradient and 2) gas recognition independent of the intensity. It is shown how these two tasks can ...

DeSTIN: A Scalable Deep Learning Architecture with Application to High-Dimensional Robust Pattern Recognition

The topic of deep learning systems has received significant attention during the past few years, particularly as a biologically-inspired approach to processing highdimensional signals. The latter often involve spatiotemporal information that may span large scales, rendering its representation in the general case highly challenging. Deep learning networks attempt to overcome this challenge by me...
